How to Prepare for a Portrait Session You'll Actually Enjoy

Start by deciding how you want the photographs to feel. Calm and intimate? Energetic and playful? Polished and editorial? That feeling should guide every other choice. A quiet home or garden supports a softer story, while a city street or windswept shoreline creates more movement and visual energy.

Choose clothing that fits well and lets you move comfortably. Neutral colors, subtle texture, and simple layers photograph beautifully without competing for attention. Avoid tiny high-contrast patterns and anything you need to adjust constantly. Most importantly, wear something that feels like an elevated version of you—not a costume chosen for a trend.

Give yourself more time than you think you need on the day of the session. Lay everything out the night before, steam clothing, pack water, and leave a buffer for traffic. Arriving rushed is one of the fastest ways to feel tense. Ten quiet minutes before we begin can completely change the energy you bring into your photographs.

You do not need to know how to pose. That is my job. I will guide you into flattering light and offer clear direction, but I will also keep you moving so nothing feels stiff. Small actions—walking, adjusting a sleeve, looking away, taking a breath—create photographs that feel far more natural than holding a perfect position.

If you feel nervous, tell me. Nearly everyone does at first, including people who appear completely at ease in their final gallery. We begin slowly, talk as we work, and build momentum together. There is no expectation that you arrive knowing what to do or feeling instantly confident.

A successful portrait session is not about performing for the camera. It is about creating the conditions where you can settle in and be seen. With a clear plan, comfortable clothing, and a photographer you trust, the experience can feel less like posing for pictures and more like spending an hour fully present in your own life.
